Private Loire Valley journey
Day 2
Vouvray and Chinon
1st winery visit day
We start today by heading east from the Château to Vouvray for a tasting with Didier and Catherine Champalou. Both accomplished vignerons who studied at the wine school in Montreuil – Bellay, they are among (if not) the best winemakers in Vouvray. And they are also very nice, warm people. Very passionate about their wine they are able to convey their knowledge and excitement in a very understandable way.
They produce several different cuvées from the Chenin Blanc grape so we will be able to taste it in its many different forms, dry, demi-sec, moelleux and sparkling.
Lunch near Villandry at a great ferme-auberge called La Giraudière. And if you haven’t seen Château de Villandry we stop in after lunch to admire the amazing gardens.
Afternoon tasting near Chinon. This afternoon we taste at Domaine Bernard Baudry. Bernard makes several different cuvées that show what Cabernet Franc is really about here in the Loire.
Transfer back to the Château Détilly.
La Giraudière
This ferme-auberge just outside of Villandry is fantastic. Real home cooking of products direct from the farm. Sumptuous goat’s cheese, in many different forms, and succulant roti de porc are specialties of the house. Family-run, the smiling matriarch is a gracious and welcoming host.
