Private Loire Valley journey
Day 3
Saumur-Champigny
2nd winery visit day
This morning we head west to the Saumur area and taste some sweet whites and some rustic reds.
On the way west we have a quick stop at the Abbaye de Fontevraud, it’s an amazing site – the largest grouping of religious buildings in France, rich in history. A private guided visit is indispensable.
Wine stop - Saumur Champigny to taste the wines of Château de Villeneuve. A top producer making two excellent whites and 3 mouthwatering reds. Mme Chevalier will show us around and take us through a tasting of the different wines the Château makes.
Lunch – We can either stop for lunch en route back to the château or head straight back. There are a couple of great spots near Chinon on the way back to the Château.
Afternoon at leisure at Chateau de Détilly.
Abbaye de Fontevraud
Whenever you’re near Chinon a must site is the Fontevraud Abbey. Founded in 1101 by Robert d'Arbrissel, the abbey has an interesting history. Fontevraud was unique in that it was run by abbesses(women), rather than abbots. Fontevraud was, before the Revolution, the richest and most important monastery in France. Fontevraud served as a prison from 1804 to 1965. Here is a great source for historical info on the abbey. http://www.xenophongroup.com/montjoie/fontevra.htm
