Overnight at Château des Alpilles.
Château des Alpilles
Photo of Villa Collalto Château des Alpilles is a beautiful provenēal country hotel set amidst luxuriant foliage and gardens. Just 2 km from Saint-Remy-de-Provence, in the heart of a magnificent, tree-filled park, this 19thC family mansion has, in the past, welcomed prestigious guests such as Chateaubriand and Lamartine.
Pont du Gard
A truly amazing feat of engineering, the Pont du Gard was part of a roman aqueduct that took water from Uzès to Nīmes. Built during the 1stC from rock quarried nearby, this monument is the most impressive remaining piece of the 50 km long aqueduct. Over 365 metres in length it spans the Gardon river, built of three rows of arches that reach a height of more than 50 metres. It is an amazing example of roman engineering and stonework. Some of the stones weigh more than 6 tons each!
St Rémy-de-Provence
Situated in the heart of the Alpilles, Saint Rémy is one of the "must-sees" in Provence. If you love history, art or charming boutiques, you will feel quite at home. The beautiful residences on the outskirts of the village and the shady cafes of place Jean-Jaurès attract both travellers and celebrities. Far from the crowds of the Cote d'Azur, artists and movie stars are known to seek refuge here, where they can appreciate the unhurried pace of life. Two important sites on the south side of St-Rémy are worth noting. St-Paul de Mausole is the abbey/insane asylum that Van Gogh committed himself to in 1889, and where he produced numerous important landscape paintings. And in the same vicinity is Glanum, one of the most important archaeological sites in France.
